In 1979 the Appleton Laboratory merged with the Rutherford Laboratory in Chilton, Oxfordshire and most research was transferred there. Although the research was now being carried out in Oxfordshire, the Slough ionosonde continued to operate from Ditton Park until 1995, when the sequence was taken over by a new sounder at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
